[music |Hans Zimmer - Black Hawk Down]

Well, it's official. I'm going to DC for the 9/12 project. There's a slight hitch in the git-up though. I had signed up to room with three other guys to keep the costs as nominal as possible, but everyone else is just wanting a single roommate so I have to pony up more cash.

We will be traveling to DC via bus. Yes, I'm not looking forward to it. Limited computational time due to no A/C to recharge the battery and no wireless access. On the flip side, it will give me time to catch up on some reading.

While I love my iPod Shuffle, I want to carry more music with me than the shuffle will allow. This isn't about wanting to listen to more music, this is about having more music with me that isn't on a laptop. To that end, I am highly considering a purple nano. Rumor has it that there may be new iPods announced September 7th which should bring the price of the current gen way down. The problem there is that it's too close to leave date for DC and therefore would require overnight shipping which may not get the goods to me fast enough. I can get a refurbed 8 GB for $99 off of Apple's site atm, but the money is in the wrong place. Perhaps I'll pick up some unexpected overtime between now and then and this purchase will make more sense in time.

Because of the trip to DC, I'm considering canceling Sidewalk this year. At this point, I haven't talked to my Aunt and Uncle in the 'ham where I have stayed years past. Furthermore, going to DC and loosing a weekend of overtime is bad enough, but twice in a month? That's just unacceptable.

It's a shame too. I naively tweeted Kevin Spacey about our fair festival and I purchased m0bil30n3 specifically with Sidewalk in mind. Last year the festival itself was a drag. I spent the entire time at panels discussing film instead of watching film. I'm not really expecting anything better this year.

I do, however, need to purchase a camera between now and then. I still want a Nikon DSLR, but it's looking like I'm going to have to settle for a coolpix. I'm not happy about this either, but the good news is that the coolpix will be more than sufficient for taking snapshots which is the point. I think I'm going to have to make a decision between the camera and the iPod. The right decision would be to not spend money on the iPod because I already have one and this point, long distance traveling like the DC trip is the exception and not the rule.

The new shuffles would do me just fine except for the fact that I can't use my Bose® In-Ear headphones. And navigating through the amount of music I want to put on the thing would be impractical without a display. So despite the new shuffles being at the right price-point, Apple fucked themselves out of a sale. In short, I want a nano for all the reasons that ehowton listed. *le sigh*

The right thing to do is buy the portable, over-priced snapshot machine and sell it when I have the cash next year to get the camera I want.

In other news, I plan on spamming the web with several film reviews this weekend along with other writing projects despited a packed weekend. Stay tuned.

Looks like I might be able to afford a shuffle now :) But I only want an MP3 player with a screen. It's stupid since I can't afford a nano or any other Apple product.

Looking forward to the movie reviews ;)

All My Shirts Now Come With Purple Buttons

I'm now looking to purchase the smallest capacity iTouch I can find, on sale. Not to act as a portable music player, as I already have that in my Nano. Rather, to behave as a portable computing platform. I grow jealous of my wife's netbook while we're in the bedroom, and an iTouch would foot that bill, hence no requirement for storage.

Wal-Mart has point & shoots on clearance which outperform my Canon for $49. Stop being such a prima-donna and get one already. You don't have the capacity to do anything differently with a DSLR currently, you're just too dumb to see it. Get the P&S - you'll use the shit out of it and be very happy that you have something more than a camera phone. A DSLR won't somehow make you suddenly smarter, or more creative, and it certainly won't magically free you up with lots of time to take pictures, so you might as well have something you can goddamn use until your in a better position to take advantage of a DSLR.

Good luck in D.C.

Re: All My Shirts Now Come With Purple Buttons

I've wanted a Touch for much the same reason, but living 5 minutes from work and not doing a lot of traveling, it doesn't make much sense. However, depending on how involved I get with the campaigns, it may become a necessary expense. We'll see.

Del: You're in a pretty lousy mood, huh?
Neal: To say the least.
Del: You ever travel by bus before?
[Neal shakes his head]
Del: Hmm. Your mood's probably not going to improve much.

Aww, buddy! I can't believe that you might have to actually choose between a camera and the iPod. And why would you ever want a nano? I had a nano; they're tiny! With my music, I needed the largest Classic available and therefore I got the 120 GB (I think) but now there's a 250 one! Size matters! I am against your nano for my own narrowminded reasons.

I'd get a DSLR. Seriously - photography is awesome and I think that a DSLR is way more worth it now. And 8GB is still little - well, in my perspective anyway.

I think you should blog more often. And is that you in the pic? You look sharp!

Another perspective...

I have about 1500 CDs only a fraction which are ripped, and currently 160GB of mp3s. Just as ridiculous as it would be for me to keep all 1500 CDs in my car (I usually fill a small pack, and change them out every so often) I find that I *actually* don't require my entire mp3 library with me at all times, especially given that I can both add, and remove songs from the mobile device.

And while I understand that some people do prefer to have their entire library with them, which is fine - seriously, to each their own - what happens when your library becomes (as an example) 251 GB? Do you throw it away? Probably not. You likely choose to leave it off. Which is what I do with my Nano, but on a slightly different scale.

Furthermore, while I'd like to wait and hold out for a big, fancy Classic or DSLR - by purchasing a lesser model immediately - one I could afford straightaway - I haven't "lost" the ability to do anything, instead I've gained something I wouldn't otherwise have while I waited and/or saved. Which I can still do while enjoying taking pictures with a point & shoot or listening to mp3s on my Nano.

Re: Another perspective...

Yeah, but things that you afford 'straightaway' may not be what you want in the future which would mean you'd spend more money anyway if you wanted to get say, a DSLR. Sometimes - being a shop-o-holic and all because I'm 'that' girl - waiting is worth it.

And with the Nano/Classic issue, I guess that you having your own way of listening is different than I am. Indeed, I enjoy carrying my entire library with me because I listen to the most random songs whenever I feel like and it's always there on my Classic. I used to have a Nano, but I had to upgrade to the latest Classic because of my almost exponentially growing library.
