Mom Comes to Town [Jun. 26th, 2009|01:00 am]

[music |Panic at the Disco - Pretty. Odd.]

The past couple of days at work haven't been busy, packed or insane, they've been steady. Not too much and maybe a tad too little. This is the way it should be when you're about to take a vacation. Two days left, then I have eight days off. Woohoo!

Yes, today make a trifecta of celebrities that have died. Boo hoo. No, Jeff Goldblum is not dead.

I wasn't feeling like going into my part-time job this evening, so I took my time when I got home. Finally, I called to see how busy it was and they said they'd be ok without me. I'm sure I"ll regret it next paycheck and probably ought not not go in, but damnit, it sure does feel good to have that kind of control. If only I could get my book deal to go through.

So after I called out, I called Mom so I'd have someone to talk to for a few minutes. Turns out she was on her way into town. She wanted to go buy a camera. She wound up with a Nikon Coolpix S550. The price of the Nikon D60 with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR and 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor Lenses along with a case and two DVDs from Nikon (woohoo!) for $750+ tax. For $350 more, I can get three free annual cleanings of the body, sensor and lenses as well as a guaranteed replacement if they camera is unrepairable. I think this is a great deal, if only I had the money.

After we looked at cameras, I finally got Mom to go into the Apple store. She isn't ready to buy, but I think I've definitely planted the seeds of doubt. I'm trying to talk her into a 24" iMac. Let's hope.

While my Netflix tactic didn't quite work, Mom is getting a 6Mbps connection like I previously told her too. I'm not happy it's through Bellsouth (one of Ma Bell's 80's anti-trust breakups) but I do know someone in Madison who has the same service. I have to say that while I didn't put it through its paces, it was pretty damn quick. So I look forward to testing this out during my vacation.

We then had dinner and I was finally able to have a serious conversation with Mom since she was by herself. What relief. I think I've talked some sense into her (other than showing her she needs to get away from the Dark Side). If she shows up at the Independence Day Tea Party, I'll know I got through to her.

Mom finally realized just how anti-socail I am and noted that I would end up old and lonely. No shit. Being sociable costs money I don't have!

She needs an iMac so she can finally effortlessly manage her digital camera in iPhoto and have iPhoto organize the pictures for her so she can find them.

Also, she has several full keyboards (like weighted key, professional keyboards) and Proteus (stand alone, rack sized devices that offer a 250+ MIDI voices). She's always wanted to use Finale and have the ability to print sheet music after composition as well as be able to track record, but that hasn't been in the cards for lack of time spent and understanding. I think Garageband can do all of this for her for less cost.

Via iChat (and Remote Desktop) she could call me and I could take control of her machine and show her how to perform whatever task she wants.

As she is getting on in age, Apple's Control + scroll zoom will help her immensely.

Finally, it would stop her from buying another POS Gateway for $300 and expecting it to last than six months and have any horsepower.

For once, she would be in control of the computer and wouldn't have to care about how it worked.

You should've bought a little camera like that a long time ago while you're saving for your D60. Nothing will replace the years of pictures you don't have because you didn't want to use a lesser camera. When you're older, and you have nothing, you'll finally realize this. Unfortunately, it will be too late.

Please re-read the final paragraph and then discuss how assinine this comment is. Clue: I have nothing worth recording. Besides, why would I want to spend $250 on some point and shoot when the base kit for the D60 is $599? I would be spending just shy of half of the coveted camera's price. How absurd!

Please re-read my next to last sentence. Clue: None of your asinine excuses will mean anything to you when you're older. Your lack of photographs will be a poor substitute for any reason you have for holding out for a camera you don't have.

I am too. Unfortunately, you may not get any smarter the older you get. Maybe what you're doing is best after all. Keep reaching for that brass ring!

You just don't see the brilliance in my previous comment.

First of all, I took a dull picture of my dull, daily activity, something you said that I would want to remember. You can see how the traffic turned out to see that image.

Additionally, I just ripped your whole idea to shreds. See, I already have a piece-of-shit point-and-shoot. It's called a camera phone. I didn't buy the phone because of the camera, I bought it because it was small, cheap and a flip phone. Does the camera on the phone have a 5x zoom and shoot at 10.2 mega-pixel? No! But what does that accomplish anyway? It just makes your shitty shot bigger and shitter. Well la-da-fuckin'-da.

I want to learn the art of photography, and I think the most economical way to do that is with a proper camera that will allow me to adjust the F-stop and white balance as well as allow me to interchange the lens. If all you have is a fixed point, when you don't have ideal light and distance conditions the whole mess is just going to come out shit. I don't want to pay $250 for shit.

When I left the Air Force I knew I wanted a job which would make $100,000 a year. Unfortunately, no one was willing to pay me that. So rather than not work for 15-years, instead, I chose to take the shit job, and work my way up.

Come to find out, you can practice with composition, lighting, depth-of-field on a P&S camera. Because you'll discover awfully quickly an expensive camera won't magically give you experience in taking photos. So instead of taking shit pics with a P&S you'll be taking shit pics with an expensive camera! Think of all the time wasted on experience because you're dumb.

It makes the baby jesus cry.

From Andi

I'm afraid I have to side with him on this one, Tom. I actually learned photography on an OLD SCHOOL box with a hole in it - like what the camera was LONG before auto advance film cameras or digital cameras came along. That's how I learned about F Stop and shutter and all that. I think I took better pictures with that camera in college than I have with any other camera (and we also didn't have Photoshop back then). Like you, I would LOVE to snatch up a D60 right now, but if it's not affordable due to financial circumstances, I'd rather practice on something cheaper rather than not take any pictures at all. And then next year I will remind Paul that he made a nice investment in beer brewing equipment this year and it's my turn for a D60 : )

Re: From Andi

You have the advantage of being married and pulling that stunt. I need to find a stupid rich girl and marry her.
